There is something about a day spent outside with your kids that just feels good for everyone. Fresh air, muddy shoes, exploring trails, spotting wildlife, and taking a break from screens for a while. That is exactly what Kids to Parks Day is all about.

Now in its 16th year, National Kids to Parks Day is a nationwide celebration sponsored by the National Parks Trust that encourages families to get outside and explore local, state, and national parks. Across the country, families use the day to discover hiking trails, learn about nature, try outdoor activities, and connect with the parks right in their own communities.

Here in the New River Valley, two local Virginia State Parks are hosting family friendly events packed with outdoor fun on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

Kids Adventure Day at New River Trail State Park

Families are invited to spend the afternoon exploring, learning, and playing outside during Kids Adventure Day.

Event Details

Date: May 16, 2026
Time: 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Program Location:
Dannelly Fitness Center
1159 Creekview Dr.
Galax, VA 24333

This event is all about hands on outdoor fun for kids and families. Activities throughout the afternoon include:

  • Bike and hike stations where kids can learn how to safely use and share the trail
  • Creek Critters exploration
  • Nature viewing opportunities
  • Coloring activities
  • Photos with Parker Red Fox, the Virginia State Parks mascot
  • A live bird presentation from Nature’s Echo from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Families are encouraged to bring bikes and helmets to enjoy the trail activities.

This is the kind of event where kids can slow down long enough to notice what is living in the creek, spot birds overhead, and explore the outdoors in a way that feels more like play than learning.

Why Kids to Parks Day Matters

Events like these are a reminder that some of the best family memories are often the simplest ones. Skipping rocks in the creek. Watching kids get excited over a turtle sighting. Walking a trail together without everyone staring at a phone.

Kids to Parks Day gives families an easy excuse to unplug for a few hours and enjoy some time together outside while also helping kids build a connection to the natural world around them.

Whether your family chooses hiking trails, wildlife programs, crafts, or simply packing a picnic and exploring, this is a great chance to experience some of the outdoor treasures we have right here in the New River Valley.

Before heading out, families are encouraged to check with each park for any weather updates or additional event information.
